Preps Notebook: Free State, Lawrence boys golf and track and field teams compete in league tournaments

The Lawrence and Free State boys golf teams golfed in the second round of the Sunflower League tournament on Tuesday and the third round on Thursday for the final golf tournament ahead of substate.

The second Sunflower League round took place at Eagle Bend Golf Course, and Lawrence and Free State took advantage of a familiar course to finish seventh and eighth, respectively, in team score.

Lawrence shot 319 as a team, one stroke behind Shawnee Mission Northwest in sixth. Free State shot 325, five strokes better than the ninth-place Gardner Edgerton Trailblazers.

Henry Thompson from Free State had the best round among the locals as he shot a 71 to finish one stroke under par, which was tied for the fifth-best mark among individual golfers. He finished with three birdies and an eagle on the seventh hole, finishing a 540-yard, par-five hole in three.

Corbin May-Bryant led the Lions in the second round, shooting a 76 that put him 15th individually. He recorded two birdies in the round. Fellow Lion Andrew Kirkwood shot a 78, putting him 22nd overall. Lou Elsten placed 39th by going nine over par for an 81 score.

Free State’s Brady Johnson, Cash Nelson and Lawrence’s Jonah Roman all shot an 84, and Free State’s Oliver Coles and Lawrence’s Jackson Lind both shot an 86. The Firebirds’ Bob Leatherman shot an 88 while Thatcher Hale shot an 89 to round out the Free State team, and Willie Dobson completed Lawrence’s varsity group with a 92.

The third Sunflower League round took place at Adams Pointe Golf Club, and Free State finished sixth in the round with a 308 team score, while Lawrence shot 328, which put the Lions 11th.

Thompson and Nelson both finished at par for the Firebirds and tied for the fifth-best score of the round. Thompson had a birdie and an eagle, while Nelson had four birdies. Fellow Firebird A.J. Kimzey finished 17th after finishing two strokes above par.

Johnson shot a 90 for the Firebirds, and Raleigh Jeter finished with a 97. Eirik Alford rounded out the Firebirds with a 98.

May-Bryant led the Lions again, shooting a 76 on the round. Lind took second on the team with an 81, and Kirkwood shot an 85. Elsten finished one stroke behind Kirkwood, and Roman and Dobson shot a 91 and a 92, respectively.

Lawrence will be at Heritage Park Golf Course on Monday for the 6A substate round, while Free State will be at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course on Tuesday for its 6A substate tournament.

Free State, Lawrence track and field teams compete in Sunflower League meet

The Lawrence and Free State track and field teams were at the Olathe District Activity Center on Thursday for the Sunflower League meet. Free State’s girls finished seventh and the boys 13th, while Lawrence’s boys took ninth and the girls 11th.

The Free State girls had several runner-up finishes. Beatrice Essman ran the 400-meter dash in 57.82 seconds, which was second in the race. Aiyanna Moss ran the race in 59.69 seconds, which put her sixth. Grace Toner was the runner-up in the 800-meter dash, finishing in two minutes, 16.84 seconds. Mady Whitney took 12th in the race with a 2:27.79 run.

Free State’s 4×400-meter relay team and the 4×800-meter relay team both finished second, with the former finishing in 4:01.54 and the latter in 9:55.01. The 4×100-meter relay took seventh at 50.02 seconds.

Nadia Karapuda placed eighth in the 1,600-meter run at 5:36.64, while Grace Christline ran it in 5:43.07 for 11th. Shana Teenor took eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.40 seconds, and Peyton Moore placed 10th at 16.93 seconds. Moore also took eighth in the 300-meter hurdles at 48.81 seconds.

For field events, Jane Cast took third in the pole vault at 11 feet, 6 inches. Chloe Voss finished fifth in the event at 10 feet, 6 inches, and Vivenne Pro landed ninth at 10 feet.

Parker Jones finished third in the long jump at 18 feet, 10.5 inches. Voss placed eighth in the triple jump at 34 feet, 0.75 inches, and Marygrace Bradford took 10th with a 33 feet, 8-inch triple jump.

Harper Graham placed 11th in the javelin at 107 feet, 8 inches, and Landry Wilson finished 13th in the shot put at 33 feet, 2.25 inches.

Lawrence’s girls team had four athletes finish fourth in the league meet. LaKeyshia Woods finished fourth in the 200-meter dash at 26.04 seconds and fourth in the 400-meter dash at 58.33 seconds. Woods also ran the 100-meter dash in 12.68 seconds, which was ninth.

In the 1600-meter run, Andie Garrett placed fourth at 5:16.47 and also took eighth in the 800-meter run at 2:21.39. In other races, Lawrence took fourth in the 4×400-meter dash at 4:17.64.

In the field events, Hadley Ornes placed fourth in the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches. In the throws, Nyah Everhart finished 14th in the javelin at 101 feet, 10 inches and 15th in the discus throw at 93 feet, 10 inches.

The Lawrence boys had their most success in the field events. Tyler Dye was the runner-up in the javelin throw with a 189 feet, 10-inch throw. Devin Foster placed fourth in the shot put at 50 feet, 5.5 inches, and Joey Dooley took fifth in the event at 49 feet, 8.25 inches.

Joseph Lucas placed fifth in the triple jump at 44 feet, 4.5 inches and took 13th in the long jump at 21 feet, 4.25 inches. Kenyon Doleman finished seventh in the high jump at 6 feet, and Aaden Chee took seventh in the pole vault at 13 feet.

For races, Lawrence’s Murphy Nowak had a day at the hurdles, taking seventh in the 300-meter hurdles at 42.29 seconds and ninth in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.36 seconds. Ethan Curry ran the 100-meter dash in 10.92 seconds, which was seventh, and ran the 200-meter dash in 23.21 seconds, which was good for 14th. Nick Palmer took 12th in the 400-meter dash at 51.85 seconds, and Oliver Schwartz ran the 1,600-meter run in 4:36.61, which was seventh in the league.

In the relays, Lawrence’s 4×100-meter relay took ninth at 43.31 seconds, the 4×400-meter relay finished 11th at 3:33.28 and the 4×800-meter relay took eighth at 8:28.61.

On the Free State side, the best finishes came from the relay teams. The 4×100-meter relay finished 12th at 43.96 seconds, the 4×400-meter relay took ninth in 3:28.64 and the 4×800-meter relay was the runner-up at 8:17.03.

Jasper Hansen Terry finished sixth in the 800-meter run at 1:59.55, while Joseph Clossen took 15th in the race at 2:04.85. Jonah Frye placed eighth in the 1600-meter run at 4:38.17, while Moses Minor came in 14th at 4:45.90. Isaac Horner took 12th in the 3200-meter run at 10:31.67.

Van Catloth took eighth in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.14 seconds and 10th in the 300-meter hurdles at 42.90 seconds.

For field events, Nathan Huerter finished 13th with a 6 foot, 0-inch high jump. Toby Kwan placed 10th in the long jump at 21 feet, 7.5 inches and 16th in the triple jump at 39 feet, 4.5 inches. Jonah Beecham took 10th in the pole vault at 12 feet.

Samuel Sengchan finished 11th in the discus at 129 feet, while Hudson Andrew took 12th in the javelin throw at 152 feet, 11 inches.
