The Bishop Seabury girls soccer team knew Thursday’s game against Maranatha Christian Academy was a chance to show what the Seahawks could do at full strength.
The Eagles won the first matchup between the two teams 3-2 on April 2, which was the Seahawks’ second game of the year with the team missing some key pieces. This time around, with more health and depth on their side, the Seahawks earned a commanding 6-2 win.
“Nothing surprises us,” Bishop Seabury coach Ivo Ivanov said. “We can make team passes, there’s continuity between forwards, midfield and defense. That’s something we’ve been waiting for a long time.”
Bishop Seabury didn’t waste time getting the ball in the net. The Seahawks scored in the first minute of the game, but allowed a tying goal in the sixth minute. A minute later, the Seahawks scored their second goal to take a 2-1 lead.
Even with allowing a goal early in the game, the Seahawks showed their ability to move the ball around quickly and put people in position to score.
“At this point, we’re used to it,” Ivanov said. “We’ve scored 70 goals — it’s a step up from last year. Last year we were good, this year, this team there is no vulnerability. We’re used to high-scoring games… it’s a lot of firepower.”
The Seahawks lost Josie Kim from last year’s team, who, alongside sophomore Macy Ankenbauer, was half of the team’s two-headed scoring threat. But the vast majority of the team returned from last year to this year, and that experience has carried over well for the Seahawks, leading to a deeper team.
“The elite (professional) teams play nowadays like basketball teams,” Ivanov said. “The motion is like a basketball motion offense with lots of movement, lots of cuts, nonstop one-touches. That’s the goal (for us).”
It’s a product of a roster that features a lot of returning faces and a talented class of freshmen. Freshmen Presley Peterson and Zoe Huebner were aggressive in pushing the ball into the final third during the game, and Peterson got a hat trick.
“Presley Peterson is absolutely unstoppable,” Ivanov said. “She’s on fire from the right wing. It’s all possible with our amazing freshmen class. The future looks really good.”
Peterson scored Bishop Seabury’s fourth goal from a pass from junior Isabella Gonzalez. Around the 22nd minute, Gonzalez got a goal of her own as she beat the Eagles’ goalkeeper to the ball.
The Eagles scored their second goal of the half with a header on a rebound from a save with about 19 minutes left in the half. Bishop Seabury junior goalkeeper Amelia Rozzi finished the half with a big save to maintain the Seahawks’ two-goal lead.
Peterson scored five minutes into the second half after a previous shot bounced off the crossbar and Peterson put the ball in the net on the rebound. Just under 20 minutes after that score, she gave the Seahawks a 6-2 lead with a breakaway goal that she put in the net.
At 9-2, Bishop Seabury is on a nine-game win streak with one of the best records in the region. The Seahawks will finish the season with home games against Northeast Kansas Homeschool and Chanute and will have a road match at Eudora between the home contests.
“It’s been a dream season,” Ivanov said. “I’m proud of the girls and how they’ve practiced. Even though we are short, we have 13 players, it’s quality over quantity.”
