Preps Notebook: 4 local bowlers advance to state tournament; 4A boys and girls wrestling seasons end
Lawrence qualified three bowlers and Free State qualified one at the 6A Olathe Northwest regional bowling meet last Wednesday, sending the four to the state meet in Wichita.
The Lawrence boys team placed sixth with a 3,295 team score but had two bowlers qualify for state as part of the top six bowlers in the regional tournament that weren’t members of the three qualifying teams.
Junior Graesyn Hoss had the second-best score among such bowlers with a 706 series score that put him third overall. Senior Camden Toews was seventh overall with a 663 and was fourth among individuals not a part of the three qualifying teams.
Free State’s boys team placed ninth with 2,929 total score, with senior Thomas Futrell leading the Firebirds with a 570 series score that put him at 32nd.
Free State’s girls team just missed the mark for qualifying as a team after taking fourth with 2,987 points. Third-place Washburn Rural finished with 3,011 points.
Free State freshman Leah Wilson was second among the top six bowlers who weren’t on a qualifying team. She had the fourth-best score overall at 649.
The Lawrence girls team scored 2,700 team points and finished eighth in the regional. Senior Morgan Christensen, however, did make the cut with a 605 series score that was ninth overall and fourth among bowlers not a part of a qualifying team.
The local quartet will finish the season at Bowlero Northrock on Wednesday in Wichita.
TONGANOXIE WINS 4A STATE BOYS WRESTLING
The Tonganoxie boys wrestling team finished first in the 4A state tournament by scoring 152.0 points and having eight placers.
Brady Martin won the 165-pound weight class with a 4-0 record in the tournament. He started with a technical fall in the first round and a pin in the quarterfinal. A 54-second pin in the semifinal put Martin in the championship match. There, Martin won with a 4-1 decision.
Clayton Crookham finished second in the 157-pound bracket with a 3-1 record. He started with a first-round pin and a 17-1 technical fall in the quarterfinal. Crookham won in a sudden victory in the semifinal to reach the championship bout, but Crookham lost by a technical fall. At 113 pounds, Brodie Starcher finished as the runner-up. He got a 15-1 major decision win to start and followed that up with a 4-2 decision. A 5-4 decision win in the semifinal put him in the first-place match, which he lost in a major decision.
Hunter Pankey took third in the 120-pound weight class. He started with a major decision win before getting a 2-0 decision win in the quarterfinal. Pankey lost the semifinal in a 7-6 decision but won his last two bouts. He got a pin in the consolation semifinal and won with a 9-3 decision in the third place match.
Casen McAlister placed third in the 126-pound bracket. He got a technical fall to start and a 10-6 decision win in the quarterfinal. After a semifinal loss, McAlister got a second technical fall in the consolation semifinal and finished with a third technical fall in the third-place match.
At 106 pounds, Rowdey Starcher finished fourth, going 3-2. He started with a technical fall in the first round and a pin in the quarterfinal. Starcher lost the semifinal on a pin but won in a major decision in the consolation semifinal. A loss by pin in the third-place match put Starcher fourth.
Dax Duffett placed fourth in the 144-pound weight class. He got a major decision win and a 4-1 decision win in his first two bouts, but Duffett lost his semifinal match in a major decision. Duffett got a pin in the consolation semifinal but lost the third-place match in a 16-9 decision.
Beau Underwood placed sixth at the 138-pound weight class. He started with a 15-11 decision win before losing by a technical fall in the quarterfinal. He rebounded with a technical fall win and a pin in the second and third consolation rounds, but Underwood lost by a major decision in the consolation semifinal and a pin in the fifth-place match.
Eudora finished 29th in the tournament with 29.0 points and a state placer.
Newt Schreiner placed sixth in the 157-pound weight class and went 3-3. After a first-round loss, Schreiner won his next three matches, all being decision wins. He was pinned in the consolation semifinal and lost the fifth-place match in a major decision.
A few other Cardinal wrestlers won matches. JJ Hardwick got a pin at 106 pounds, Hawken Andrews got two pins at 138 pounds and Reilly Neis got a pin in the 215-pound bracket.
Baldwin finished 42nd with 7.0 team points and had four wrestlers compete in the tournament.
Max Harvey was the lone Bulldog to win a match in the tournament. In the 175-pound weight class, Harvey went 2-2. He started with a pin but lost the quarterfinal. He got his second pin in the second consolation round before being pinned in the next round.
FIVE LOCALS MAKE 4A GIRLS WRESTLING PODIUM
Five wrestlers between Tonganoxie, Baldwin and Eudora finished the girls wrestling season on the podium after the 4A girls wrestling state tournament.
Tonganoxie finished with three state placers and two state champions, while totaling 72.0 points, which was seventh in the tournament.
Kaylee Pankey won the 115-pound weight class with four wins in the tournament. She started with two pins in the first two rounds before an 11-7 decision win in the semifinal match. Pankey secured the state title with a 10-2 major decision in the championship bout.
Autumn Wilson won the 120-pound weight class with four pins. Her first came in 46 seconds, and her quarterfinal pin came in the second period. Wilson won the semifinal match with a pin in two minutes, 50 seconds, and she won the state title with a pin in 3:33.
Riley Crookham placed sixth in the 100-pound weight class, going 3-3. After a technical fall loss in the first round, Crookham won her next three bouts with pins. She lost in a major decision in the consolation semifinal, and a 3-1 decision loss in the fifth-place match put her sixth.
Katy Duncan, at 190 pounds, went 1-2, getting a pin in the first consolation round.
Baldwin finished with 30.0 team points, putting the Bulldogs in 24th place, all coming from 235-pound state champion Finnley Kellerman. Kellerman had four pins in the tournament, the first in 35 seconds and the second in 1:18. A 38-second pin in the semifinal put her in the championship, which she won on a pin in 4:15.
Eudora had one placer and scored 11.5 team points, which was 39th in the tournament.
Clara Peterson was Eudora’s state placer, as she finished sixth in the 170-pound weight class. She started with a technical fall but was pinned in the quarterfinal. Peterson won her next two bouts by decision to reach the consolation semifinal, which she lost by a pin. In the fifth-place match, Peterson was pinned.
Abby Fager at 140 pounds went 1-2 in the tournament, winning her first match on a pin.
Perry-Lecompton’s Jolie Corcoran won a consolation-round bout in a pin and went 1-2 in the tournament.
