10 Free State, Lawrence boys wrestlers compete in Dodge City tournament

The Lawrence and Free State boys wrestling teams competed in the Dodge City Showdown on Friday and Saturday in both teams’ first tournament of the new year.

The Firebirds brought six wrestlers to Dodge City and scored 74.0 points.

Zane Shaw in the 190-pound weight class had the highest finish among the Firebirds, placing second. Shaw won his first eight matches, starting with a technical fall and a 4-1 sudden victory. He won the next two rounds with technical falls, followed by two pins. A 19-9 major decision win put him in the semifinal, which he won in a tiebreaker. In the first-place match, however, Shaw lost in a major decision.

Damian Quick placed fifth in the 120-pound weight class with six wins in the tournament. Quick started with a pin before receiving a bye in the second round. Quick lost in an 8-6 decision in the third round but won three straight with pins following the loss. A 9-7 decision loss put Quick in the consolation semifinals, which he won in a 12-9 decision. Quick finished with a sudden-victory win in the fifth-place match.

In the 285-pound weight class, Xander Swoyer placed seventh. Swoyer won his first five matches of the tournament, all by pins. Four of the pins came in under a minute, and Swoyer earned his fifth pin in 11 seconds. Swoyer was pinned in the sixth round but bounced back with a 9-0 major decision win. After losing the next two rounds, Swoyer concluded the tournament with a win by medical forfeit in the seventh-place match.

Two Firebirds placed ninth: Tristan Moore in the 132-pound weight class and Brogan Hagen in the 144-pound weight class. Moore started with two pins before receiving a bye. After losing his next two matches, Moore finished with a technical fall in the consolation quarterfinal, a pin in the consolation semifinal and a pin in the ninth-place match.

Hagen started with a pin but lost his second match. He pinned his third opponent but lost in the next round. Hagen also finished with three wins, starting with a pin in the consolation quarterfinal, then winning in the consolation semifinal with a major decision. In the ninth-place match, Hagen won in an 11-6 decision.

Coghlan Odom finished 20th in the 157-pound weight class. Odom wrestled and lost his first two matches, but had to medically forfeit the rest of his matches.

Lawrence sent four wrestlers to Dodge City, with Lou Elsten leading the Lions by placing fourth in the 126-pound weight class. Elsten started with a 9-3 decision win and a 24-second pin before losing in the third round in a sudden victory. After a bye, Elsten won his next five matches, starting with a technical fall, a pin and a win by medical forfeit. A pin and a 10-4 decision win in the eighth and ninth rounds, respectively, put Elsten in the third-place match. There, Elsten lost in a 7-5 decision.

Jadin Harrell placed eighth in the 190-pound weight class, winning his first four matches. After a technical fall in the first round, Harrell won his next three matches with pins. Harrell lost his next match in a 10-6 decision before having to medically forfeit his final four matches.

Saylor Jackson was also in the 190-pound weight class and placed 12th. Jackson was pinned in his first match but bounced back with a 10-1 major decision win. Jackson lost his next four matches but picked up a win by a medical forfeit in the seventh round. He lost his next two matches.

In the 138-pound weight class, Blaine Schwada lost his first three matches before being injured in his fourth. For the final six matches, Schwada had to medically forfeit.

Lawrence will host Baldwin for a dual on Wednesday, while Free State will next wrestle in a tournament at Basehor-Linwood on Friday.
