Eight Free State wrestlers and four Lawrence wrestlers earned a spot in the 6A boys state wrestling tournament after placing in Saturday’s regional tournaments.

Lawrence wrestled in the 6A East regional tournament and scored 74.0 points, which was 13th in the tournament. The Lions’ four wrestlers to move on to the state tournament is an improvement from last year’s three. Lawrence likely would’ve had a fifth, had three-time state placer Lou Elsten wrestled, but an illness sidelined the senior wrestler.

Senior Jadin Harrell led the way for the Lions, finishing as a regional champion in the 190-pound weight class. Harrell went 4-0 with four pins, three of which came in under a minute. After a 25-second pin in the first round, Harrell got a pin 17 seconds into the third period in his quarterfinal match. He finished with a 15-second pin in the semifinal and a 54-second pin in the first-place match.

Two Lions took fifth in their respective weight classes. Sophomore Logan Druen earned his second trip to the state tournament by placing fifth in the 106-pound bracket, going 3-2. Druen lost his quarterfinal match but bounced back with two wins in the consolation bracket, both with pins. He lost the consolation semifinal by an 8-6 decision but finished with a pin in the fifth-place bout.

Sophomore Drennen Shorter placed fifth in the 132-pound weight class. Shorter started with two pins to get to the semifinal match, but Shorter was pinned there and in the consolation semifinal bout. He finished strong with a pin in the fifth-place match.

Sophomore Jacek Aber placed sixth in the 113-pound weight class and earned a place at state. Aber started with a win before being pinned in the quarterfinal. Aber bounced back with a 25-second pin in the second consolation round and a 7-5 decision win in the third round. Aber lost his final two bouts on pins in the consolation semifinal and the fifth-place match.

Senior Dominic Phommaseng didn’t qualify but picked up an 8-5 decision win in the tournament. Junior Jace Schofield in the 215-pound bracket got a consolation-round pin in the tournament.

At the 6A West regional tournament, Free State scored 100.0 points, which was seventh in the regional.

Senior Zane Shaw finished as the runner-up in the 190-pound weight class, going 2-1 in the tournament. Shaw started with a 20-5 technical fall in the quarterfinal before a 5-3 decision win in the semifinal. Shaw’s loss came in the first-place match by a 19-3 technical fall.

At the 132-pound weight class, junior Tristen Moore took fourth. After an 18-2 technical fall win in the first round, Moore got a third-period pin in the quarterfinal. Moore rebounded from a loss in the semifinal with an 18-3 technical fall win in the consolation semifinal. He finished fourth after a 7-6 loss in the third-place match.

Junior Ben Lyles placed fifth in the 175-pound weight class, going 4-2. Lyles started with a loss but won his next three matches, two of which were pins and the other being a 13-10 decision win. Lyles was pinned in the consolation semifinal but won by injury default in the fifth-place match.

In the 215-pound bracket, senior Cameron Salb placed sixth with a 3-3 record. He started with a pin before being pinned in the quarterfinal. Salb picked up back-to-back wins with a pin and a medical forfeit to reach the consolation semifinal. In his final two matches, Salb lost with pins, leading to his sixth-place finish.

Sophomore Damian Quick at 120 pounds and junior Coghlan Odom at 157 pounds both placed seventh. Quick started with an 18-3 technical fall win but lost in the quarterfinal. He got a 15-2 major decision win in his first consolation match but lost his next bout with a 7-2 decision. In the seventh-place match, Quick won with a pin.

Odom started with a pin but lost with a 6-3 decision in the quarterfinal. He bounced back with an 11-2 major decision win but lost his next bout with a 7-3 decision. Odom finished with a 4-2 decision win in the seventh-place match.

Juniors Brogan Hagen at 144 pounds and Hudson Andrew at 150 pounds both finished eighth. Hagen picked up a pin and a 13-0 major decision win in his first and third matches. He lost his final two bouts to put him in eighth. Andrew got two pins in his opening match and his third bout, but he ended the tournament with two losses to put him in eighth.

Sophomore Davauri Goodman got a win in the 106-pound weight class with a pin. Junior Cesar Martinez at 285 pounds got a 13-4 major decision win in his second bout.

All 12 local wrestlers will be at AdventHealth Sports Park on Friday for the first day of the two-day 6A state tournament.
