OVERLAND PARK — Lawrence’s boys and girls basketball teams faced a pair of state championship favorites on Tuesday, with Shawnee Mission South defending its home court with two commanding wins over the Lions.

The Raiders won the girls basketball game 82-42 and won the boys game 80-51.

For the girls basketball game, the Lions had a tough challenge facing the top 6A East team in the state, but the Lions kept things close to start the game. The Raiders were able to start with a strong offensive start, scoring 20 points in the first quarter, but the Lions kept within range with 12 points.

But the Raiders went on a 19-0 run to start the second quarter that put the Lions down by nearly 30. Freshman Marley Doleman got Lawrence’s first points of the second quarter with two minutes left, and junior Cami Nauholz picked up a free throw soon after. Nauholz later scored a field goal on a second-chance opportunity, and Doleman finished the half with a 3-pointer.

The Raiders still extended their lead in the final minutes of the half, despite the Lions finding some life on offense. At the break, Shawnee Mission South held a 27-point lead.

The Lions struggled with turnovers, missing passes that led to steals or balls bouncing out-of-bounds. When the Raiders went on their runs, the Lions were allowing fast-break opportunities with quick turnovers.

Nauholz started the third quarter with a field goal after getting an offensive rebound, but the Raiders went on a seven-point run to take a 30-point lead. The Lions kept the game around the 30-point mark for most of the third quarter with Nauholz hitting a couple of second-chance points and sophomore Macyn Ramsay hitting a 3-pointer. The Raiders closed the quarter strong with a push to get them to a 35-point lead.

Lawrence finished with seven points in the final eight minutes, starting with a layup from sophomore Zoey Barber. The Raiders pushed their lead to over 40 points in the final minutes as they won 82-42.

In the boys basketball game, the Lions put up a strong fight against the undefeated Raiders but ultimately fell short.

“Tonight was a great opportunity for us to play the No. 1 team in the state and measure ourselves up against that,” Lawrence coach Nick Wood said. “Quite frankly, I thought our kids came out and played really well.”

The Raiders quickly scored five points, but junior Kenyon Doleman slowed the momentum with a 3-pointer. The Raiders responded with a 3, but senior Eddie Roman Nose had a five-point run to tie the game. Sophomore Joey Dooley scored in the paint to give the Lions a two-point lead.

The Raiders finished the quarter out with a 9-3 run and took the lead for good, but the Lions continued to push.

“I loved our mindset and the way we played early on,” Wood said. “I’m super proud of them. (Shawnee Mission South) is No. 1 in the state for a reason. The margin of error is really small. They make you pay for any minor mistake you make.”

Both teams traded buckets to start the second quarter before the Raiders extended their lead to double digits with three quick buckets. Sophomore Truth Pope and Doleman made a shot each to cut the deficit within 10 midway through the quarter, but the Raiders entered halftime on another quick scoring run to take an 18-point lead.

The Lions had a slow start offensively in the third quarter and went scoreless through the first four minutes. Dooley got the Lions on the board with a 3-pointer on an assist from junior Caleb Wingerd, and the Lions managed seven more points for the rest of the quarter.

Lawrence battled to keep the deficit around 20 points, with some paint buckets from sophomore Simon Simien and Doleman keeping the Lions there. Dooley had a strong finish to the game, scoring six points, the last being a free throw to make it a 71-50 Shawnee Mission South lead. But the Raiders finished on another run and ended the game leading by 29.

“If we play that way the rest of the season, we’re going to win some basketball games,” Wood said. “They handled the adversity really well. We’ve been focusing so much on controlling what we can control, and I thought they really did. They made (Shawnee Mission South) sweat a little bit.”

Lawrence will be on the road again on Friday when the Lions face Olathe Northwest.
