Free State takes seventh, Lawrence 13th in Sunflower League boys wrestling tournament
Free State and Lawrence’s boys wrestling teams competed in the Sunflower League tournament on Saturday, with the Firebirds placing seventh and the Lions 13th.
Free State started with a first-round dual win over Olathe East, 54-29. The Firebirds won nine matches in the dual, three of which were open wins. Damian Quick won the 120-pound match with a pin, as did Emmett Williams in the 126-pound bout. Free State won the 132- and 138-pound bouts with open wins.
Aaron Whalen and Brogan Hagen pinned their opponents in the 144- and 150-pound matches, respectively. Coghlan Odom won by pin in the 165-pound match, and Cameron Salb won the 215-pound bout with a pin.
Lawrence’s first-round dual ended in a 54-22 loss to Olathe West. The Lions won four matches, including Logan Druen’s open win in the 106-pound bout. Galen Dewhirst won by a 14-0 major decision in the 120-pound match, while Lou Elsten and Drennen Shorter won with pins in the 126- and 132-pound weights.
The Lions and the Firebirds squared off in the second round, with the Firebirds winning 51-22. Druen got an open win for the Lions in the 106-pound bout, while Quick got the Firebirds an open win in the 120-pound match.
Elsten won with a 16-0 technical fall win over Williams in the 126-pound match, but the Firebirds won the 132-pound bout with a pin from Tristan Moore over Shorter. Lawrence’s Blaine Schwada won with a 17-2 technical fall over Kash Laforge, and Hagen won over Lawrence’s Ryan Farrell in the 144-pound match with a pin. The Lions got their final win in the 150-pound match where Liam Beardsley pinned Bryce Warner in 55 seconds.
The final six matches went in Free State’s favor. Hudson Andrew pinned Patrick Stanwix at the 157-pound weight, and Odom pinned Lawrence’s Hunter Lown in 37 seconds for the 165-pound bout. Ben Lyles and Zane Shaw pinned Cameron Dozier and Saylor Jackson in the 175- and 190-pound matches, respectively. Salb won the 215-pound match over Jace Schofield in an 11-8 decision, and Leo Salb pinned Quendal Johnson in the 285-pound bout.
Free State lost its third dual 36-30 to Olathe West. The Firebirds won the 120-pound match with Quick’s 45-second pin. Moore won with a pin at the 132-pound weight. Odom won with a 40-second pin in the 165-pound bout, and the Firebirds picked up their final two wins in the 175- and 190-pound weight classes with Lyles and Shaw, respectively, winning by pins.
Lawrence’s third-round dual came against Olathe East, where the Hawks won 51-27. Elsten won by pin in the 126-pound match, and Shorter got the Lions their second pin in the 132-pound bout. Schwada picked up an open win in the 138-pound weight, and Farrell won in a 14-9 decision at 144 pounds.
The Lions received a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket, while the Firebirds faced Shawnee Mission East and lost, 40-39. Quick got the Firebirds a win with a first-period pin at 120 pounds, while Moore and Laforge won the 132- and 138-pound bouts with pins.
Hagen won a 5-0 decision at 144 pounds, and Odom won with a first-period pin in the 157-pound match. Shaw and Cameron Salb won the 190- and 215-pound bouts by pins, putting the Firebirds at 39 points. A loss by pin in the heavyweight match put the Lancers ahead by a point in the dual score.
Free State finished with a 64-12 win in the seventh-place match over Shawnee Mission South. The Raiders’ two wins came from open matches, while the Firebirds won nine full matches. Free State got open wins in the 120- and 126-pound weight classes.
Laforge pinned his opponent in the 132-pound match, and Moore won his 138-pound bout with a 25-12 major decision. Hagen won at 144 pounds with a pin, while Andrew and Odom won the 157- and 165-pound matches with pins. Lyles and Shaw won their matches with pins in just over a minute, while Cameron Salb won with a pin in 22 seconds in the 215-pound match. Free State’s Cesar Martinez won the heavyweight bout with a pin for the final match.
Lawrence finished with a 46-34 win over Shawnee Mission North to take 13th. Shorter, Stanwix and Johnson picked up open wins at the 132-, 157- and 285-pound weights.
Druen pinned his opponent in 27 seconds at 106 pounds, and Elsten won with a 15-0 technical fall in the 126-pound match. Schwada won by a 17-1 technical fall in the 138-pound match, and Beardsley got a pin in the 150-pound bout. Jackson got the Lions their final six points with a 38-second pin in the 190-pound match.
Free State and Lawrence have the next week off from wrestling but will return to action with the regional tournaments. The Lions will be at Shawnee Mission North, while the Firebirds will be down in Wichita North.
