Lawrence basketball went 2-0 against Shawnee Mission West in Lawrence on Friday, with the girls basketball team winning by 22 and the boys gritting out an overtime win.

To start the doubleheader, a 25-point second quarter led the Lawrence girls basketball team to a 64-42 win over Shawnee Mission West.

It took a few minutes for the Lions to get going offensively, as the first couple of possessions ended in missed shots. Junior Cami Nauholz got things going with a free throw and a second-chance field goal.

The Vikings also had a slow start offensively, going scoreless for the first three minutes of the game until getting a free throw. Sophomore Zoey Barber kept the Lions in the lead with back-to-back layups while weaving through traffic and later finding Nauholz for a 3-pointer.

Lawrence closed the quarter with a solid 14-11 lead but turned the offense and defense up a level at the start of the second quarter.

Sophomore Macyn Ramsay scored two quick fast-break baskets, the first being assisted by Barber and the second coming after Ramsay’s steal. That forced the Vikings to call timeout, but the Lions kept the momentum through the break. Freshman Marley Doleman got a steal and fast-break layup, followed by a 3-pointer from Barber.

“We all just connected super well, and that helped us play with super high energy,” freshman Layla Simmons said. “Also our defense, which helped play into our offense … that matters a lot. You can still have a good offense, but if you’re not getting those rebounds or those steals, you can still lose the game. But defense plays into everything.”

The Vikings got on the board with a free throw, but the Lions continued to pour it on with Nauholz scoring six-straight in the paint and Ramsay hitting a 3-pointer. Sophomore Lucy Juelsgaard hit freshman Layla Simmons cutting to the rim for an open layup that forced the Vikings to call a timeout with under three minutes left in the half trailing Lawrence 35-14.

The Vikings found some life with two big 3s in the final minutes of the half, but the Lions held a 40-22 lead at the break.

Doleman said the team wanted to avoid becoming complacent after building the lead and said the focus was to keep pushing.

“We get that from our seniors,” Doleman said. “We always want to play up to our level and never down.”

The Lions went on another run after the Vikings cut the deficit to under 20 points and scored eight-straight points midway through the third quarter. The Lions kept feeding Nauholz, and she finished the third quarter with 11 of the team’s 16 points.

The Lions kept their 20-point lead through the rest of the game, and Doleman’s late 3-pointer solidified the Lions’ 64-42 win over the Vikings at home.

Lawrence boys basketball came into the game fresh off a win over F.L. Schlagle on Thursday and gutted out a 67-54 overtime win over the Vikings.

“I’m so proud of them,” Lawrence coach Nick Wood said. “For them to be so resilient, make winning plays down the stretch and hang in there … credit to Shawnee Mission West for making things tough, but our guys continued to believe in each other and fight.”

Junior Kenyon Doleman stole the show with an electric performance from beyond the arc. He scored 28 points with seven 3s. Early in the game, Doleman’s 3s were what kept the Lions in it. The Vikings scored the first points of the game, but Doleman hit two 3s to put the Lions ahead. He hit a third later in the quarter, and sophomore Joey Dooley hit a buzzer-beater 3 to give the Lions a 14-11 lead.

“From the first quarter, when I hit those three 3s, that just kept me going — the crowd kept me going,” Doleman said. “Everyone’s energy was just great.”

The Lawrence offense slowed down in the second quarter with only two made field goals and seven total points. That allowed the Vikings to take a 27-21 lead at halftime.

“They had better energy than we did in the first half,” Wood said. “They wanted it more than us. So it was up to us to go out for 16 more minutes, which ended up being 20, and get it back. And credit to our guys, they did that.”

Lawrence came out of the break on fire and attacked the Vikings, forcing them to foul. Doleman kept making big shots, including a 3-pointer to bring the Lions within five points. He then hit another to give the Lions a 35-33 lead.

The rest of the game was back and forth in a raucous environment. Wood said the crowd played a major role in willing the team back to the win.

The Lions consistently got to the free-throw line after getting into the bonus early into the quarter, and the Vikings were able to hit several 3s anytime the Lions started to get too much momentum. By the end of the third quarter, the Vikings held a 40-37 lead, and they doubled their lead with a 3-pointer to start the fourth.

Lawrence looked in trouble early into the fourth quarter, taking a 48-40 lead. But the Lions clawed their way back, scoring five-straight points from free throws. The Vikings made a 2-pointer, but the Lions tied the game at 50-50 after senior Eddie Roman Nose hit two free throws and Doleman knocked down another 3-pointer with under two minutes to go.

“He played to his capabilities,” Wood said. “He’s a big-time player. When he plays like that, he’s going to give us a chance on most nights.”

The Vikings took back the lead with a field goal, and the Lions missed their next two free throws. The Vikings got to the line and went one-for-two with 23 seconds left to take a 53-50 lead. Lawrence called a timeout and drew up a 3-point play, which Doleman sank with eight seconds left to send the game to overtime.

“I was just trying to knock down the shot,” Doleman said of the 3. “My head was pretty clear before I took that shot.”

In the final four minutes, the Lions went all out. Roman Nose and Doleman both hit layups to get a four-point lead. The Vikings made a free throw, but Dooley closed the game with six points, giving the Lions a 63-54 lead. Senior Devin Foster scored the three points, and Roman Nose finished the game with a made technical free throw to give the Lions the win.

For the Lions, the win is something the team can hang its hat on and harken back to when moments get tough. The Lions have come up short in a number of close games this season, but on Friday, they made the winning plays.

“If they keep at it, keep battling, good things can happen,” Wood said. “The energy we brought into overtime was big time.”

Both Lawrence basketball teams will be on the road on Tuesday against Shawnee Mission South, starting with the girls basketball game at 5:30 p.m.
