Lawrence's Jack Bauch returns the ball in a tennis quad at Sport Pavilion Lawrence on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, in Lawrence.
A day after competing in a tournament from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Lawrence boys tennis team had a more low-key day by hosting a tennis quad on Wednesday.
“It was a fun day,” Lawrence coach Stephen Hudson said. “We played well, considering we were a little shorthanded today on doubles. It was a lower-stress day because it wasn’t the lineup that we’ll use for Sunflower League and regionals, but it’s one that gave our singles guys a chance to rest.”
The Lions moved some lineups around to keep people fresh on Wednesday, as the team enters its final stretch of regular season competition. When Lawrence competes on Friday and next week at the Sunflower League tournament, the Lions will return to the lineups they’ve been working with for most of the season.
“We were exhausted after having played six matches yesterday,” Hudson said. “I felt we needed a mental break from that, and in my mind, this was kind of a refresher and let them kind of reset for the next thing.”
Lawrence faced Junction City for the first round and went 4-0 in the matches. Koh Brewer won 8-4 as the No. 1 singles, and Jack Bauch won 8-0 in the No. 2 singles. The two had been competing together as the No. 1 doubles team, but the two split up for the day and both performed well.
“Koh has wanted to play singles all year, so I gave him some experience for the future,” Hudson said. “Jack used to play singles all the time, and I wanted him to go out on a bang and play one more time on his home court as a senior.”
Lawrence’s top doubles team of Eli Iskandrani and Wyatt Freed won 8-7 (7-3), and the No. 2 doubles team of Julian Bricker and Youngseok Oh won 8-0.
In the second round, Lawrence faced Olathe South and went 1-3. Brewer lost 8-2, but Bauch won his singles match 8-5. The Lions lost both doubles matches, the first in an 8-2 loss and the second in an 8-7 (8-6) match.
The Lions finished the day against Gardner Edgerton and went 3-1. Brewer bounced back with an 8-2 victory, and Bauch finished undefeated on the day with an 8-1 win. The doubles team of Iskandrani and Freed won 8-2, and the No. 2 team of Oh and Oliver Hester, who filled in for Bricker for the final match, lost 8-5.
Lawrence and Free State will be at Sport Pavilion Lawrence on Friday for a tournament, the last regular season tournament for Lawrence and the penultimate regular season tournament for Free State with the Sunflower League tournament starting on April 30.
Hudson said he’s excited for the postseason and for seeing how the Lions stack up against others in the Sunflower League, adding that the Lions “seem to like challenges.” For the team, a little bit of fine tuning is all that’s left before entering the postseason.
“We need to do some fine tuning like aiming our serves a little better, angling our volleys a little bit better, learning how to play better-percentage tennis in singles” Hudson said. “At this point, there’s no secret we have. We’re just going to keep practicing hard every day and enjoying it.”
