Free State won its senior night girls swim and dive quad against Bishop Miege, Lawrence and Mill Valley on Wednesday as the team continued to set more season bests.

“At this point in the season, we’re looking good,” Free State coach Janna Skinner said.

Free State scored 454 points, with Mill Valley scoring the second most at 297. Lawrence came in third with 251, while Bishop Miege was fourth at 203.

The quad started with diving, which Free State’s Harper Huston won with 205.60 points. Her teammate Lucy Koch scored 143.20 points, which put her third, and Lawrence’s Naomi Klopfenstein finished fourth at 141.20 points.

The swim section started with the first of three relays, the 200-yard medley relay. Free State’s top team of Siggi Mattes, Helena Mattes, Ella Marsh and Ruby Jiang won it with a one-minute, 54.98-second time. Lawrence’s top team of Olivia Oehlert, Ashlyn Tell, Isabella Paniagua and Anna Gordon-Ross placed fourth at 2:18.56.

The individual events started with the 200-yard freestyle, which Free State’s Bridget Collins won at 2:08.72. Fellow Firebird Dylan Tenbrink was the runner-up at 2:18.57 and senior Firebird Amelia Rockhold took fourth at 2:40.15. Lawrence’s Elizabeth Hite finished in 2:57.28, which was seventh, and Lions Lucy Miller-Coleman, Ainsley Erber and Salome Stolz placed eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively.

Marsh won the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:08.51 time, which was almost 12 seconds faster than Jiang’s runner-up time of 2:20.38. Skinner said Marsh was close to beating Free State’s school record, which is something Marsh is aiming for.

“She was 0.16 away,” Skinner said. “She has a very powerful kick… That is a big part of it. She’s a swimmer who takes everything you say and applies it to practice. Everything she does in practice has a purpose. She’s zoned in and pushes herself very hard all the time. It pays off.”

Tell placed third in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:27.81, and Paniagua took sixth at 2:59.40. Fellow Lion Bella Gragg finished 10th at 3:21.14.

Free State’s Maria Fuentes Sanchez took third in the 50-yard freestyle at 29.35 seconds. Firebird Alina Jones placed fourth at 29.84 seconds, and Oehlert took sixth at 30.51 seconds. Free State’s Penelope All came in seventh at 30.55 seconds, with her teammate Sophia Anderson finishing eighth at 30.71 seconds. Stella Dorssom of Free State rounded out the top 10 at 31.83 seconds.

After the 50-yard freestyle, the quad paused to celebrate Free State’s two seniors: Rockhold and Ashlyn Johnson. The meet resumed with the 100-yard butterfly, which Jiang won with a 1:02.96 time. Helena Mattes was the runner-up at 1:03.24, while Tell took fourth at 1:08.14 and Lawrence’s Wren Jay placed fifth at 1:27.04.

Tenbrink won the 100-yard freestyle with a 1:01.96 swim, while Fuentes Sanchez was the runner-up at 1:05.30. Dorssom placed sixth at 1:11.59, and Mira Abrams finished seventh at 1:13.49. Jones made ninth at 1:15.87, and Lawrence’s Abigail Johnson rounded out the top 10 at 1:18.00.

Siggi Mattes won the 500-yard freestyle at 5:25.62, with Collins as the runner-up at 5:41.79 and Ashlyn Johnson third at 6:43.55. Rockhold finished fourth at 6:56.60, and Gordon-Ross rounded out the top five at 7:07.91. Lawrence’s Hayley Swart finished seventh at 7:47.52, and Hite took eighth at 8:05.88.

The Firebirds were the runners-up in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with the team of Collins, Helena Mattes, Tenbrink and Jiang swimming in 1:49.64. Lawrence’s team of Tell, Paniagua, Gordon-Ross and Oehlert took third at 2:01.63.

Marsh won her second event with the 100-yard backstroke at 59.34 seconds. Siggi Mattes was the runner-up at 1:04.69, while Ashlyn Johnson made the top five at 1:17.57. All took sixth at 1:19.40, and Paniagua placed ninth at 1:25.40.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Helena Mattes was the runner-up at 1:13.74. Firebird Chloe Carnagey took fifth at 1:27.59, and Lawrence’s Keira Wells placed 11th at 1:36.95.

For the final event, Free State dominated the 400-yard freestyle relay, winning it in 3:56.02, which was 45 seconds faster than the second-place team, which was Free State’s ‘B’ team. Collins, Tenbrick, Siggi Mattes and Marsh made up the winning group, and Fuentes Sanchez, Dorssom, Jones and All were on the second team.

Lawrence’s team of Oehlert, Jay, Abrams and Gordon-Ross placed fifth at 4:47.28.

Lawrence will host a swim meet on Tuesday, and both teams will swim at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center the following Friday and Saturday in a two-day invitational.
