GARDNER — The Lawrence boys tennis team competed in its second competition of the season for the second day in a row at a tennis quad at Gardner Edgerton High School on Wednesday.

“I’m thrilled with how we’re doing so far,” Lawrence coach Stephen Hudson said. “We started the season with back-to-back long days, but everybody has winning records, and we’ve picked up a couple of good wins so far.”

Hudson said the team is playing well as everyone is working into new positions and roles for the team. The Lions only have two returning varsity players from last year, Jack Bauch, who is switching from singles to doubles, and Julian Bricker, who is switching from doubles to singles.

“We’re going to find the right combination to see who is going to play singles and doubles,” Hudson said. “But I’m pretty happy with how things have gone.”

Bricker competed as the No. 1 singles player for the Lions on Wednesday and went 2-1 in the quad. He started with an 8-6 win in the first round over Shawnee Mission South’s Aden Braden-Alvarez. Bricker lost 8-4 in the second round to Olathe West’s Owen Taylor but Bricker finished the day with an 8-4 win over Gardner Edgerton’s Chase Rhea.

“He wanted to try singles, and he has a winning record in No. 1 singles, which is really good,” Hudson said.

Eli Iskandrani lost his three matches competing at No. 2 singles for Lawrence. He started with an 8-6 loss to Shawnee Mission South before losing 8-2 to Olathe West’s second singles player. Iskandrani finished with an 8-5 loss in his match against Gardner Edgerton’s Cole MacKinney.

“He was close on all three,” Hudson said of Iskandrani. “You’ve got to take some lumps before you can give some. He’s a freshman, so it’s good experience for him.”

Bauch and Koh Brewer made the No. 1 Lawrence doubles team, and the duo went 3-0 in the quad. The team started with an 8-0 win over the Shawnee Mission South duo before beating Olathe West’s doubles team 8-5 in the second round. Bauch and Brewer finished the day with an 8-0 win over Gardner Edgerton.

Lawrence’s No. 2 doubles team consisted of Oliver Hester and Dwight Souders, who went 2-1 in the quad. They started with an 8-1 win over the Shawnee Mission South doubles team but lost in the next round to Olathe West 8-4. The duo finished with an 8-2 win over Gardner Edgerton’s second doubles team.

For the first half of the season, Hudson said the focus is on making everyone, especially the freshmen and sophomores, well-rounded tennis players, rather than trying to have them specialize too much into either singles or doubles.

“It’s about fitting the skills to the game,” Hudson said. “Some people are better at singles if they’re more patient, better at groundstrokes, if they’re OK being independent. If you’re social, you like volleys and you’re a type-A personality, you might be better in doubles.”

The goal is to see them grow before determining who is going to play what by the midway point of the season.

“We want to hone our skills in the last half of the season when it matters most,” Hudson said.
