Preps Notebook: FS hosts Eudora, LHS in girls golf tournament; Lawrence cross-country competes in out-of-state meet

Eudora, Free State and Lawrence girls golf teams compete in Firebird Invitational on Monday
Free State hosted the Firebird Invitational on Monday at Lawrence Country Club with 15 girls golf teams competing, including Eudora and Lawrence.
The Firebirds took fifth in the invitational with a 395 team score. Eudora finished seventh with a 400 score and Lawrence placed 12th at 470.
For the Firebirds, Claire Heinritz tied for 18th in the individual leaderboard by scoring a 95. Firebirds Tola Jankowski and Laurel Stancil tied for 21st shooting a 97 each. Mallory White tied for 37th with a 106. Haylee Graham shot +42 and placed 49th, while Avery Lonnberg rounded out the group by scoring a 114 and finishing 54th.
Marleigh Grant led the Eudora Cardinals, tying for 10th individually and shooting an 86. Brooklynn Akers tied for 16th with a 93, and Josie Vogt tied for 42nd at +40. Brynn Deterding shot a 113 and placed 52nd, while Leslie Cundiff scored a 123, which was good for 73rd in the invitational.
For Lawrence, Cami Nauholz tied for 42nd with a 110 score, which led the Lions. Isabelle Richards took 55th (+45), while Keira Wells placed 61st (+47).
Lola Johnson scored a 128, which was 76th overall, and Mila Morrison shot a 131 for 79th in the invitational.
The Firebirds will be at Eagle Bend Golf Course on Oct. 1, while the Lions have a meet at Falcon Ridge Golf Club the Monday before the invitational with Free State. Eudora will be at Dub’s Dread Golf Course on Sept. 30 for the Cardinals’ next golf meet.
Lawrence cross-country competes in interstate invitational in Minnesota
The Lawrence High School cross-country team traveled to Falcon Heights, Minn. over the weekend to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational featuring runners from around the Midwest.
The Lawrence boys competed in the Gopher 5K and came in ninth out of 29 teams with 292 points.
Junior Oliver Schwartz led the Lions with a 17 minute, 41.4-second time that was 16th in the race. Junior Riley Swart came in 38th overall and second on the team by running the course in 18:35.2, and junior Garrett Rhea rounded out the team’s top three with a 18:59.6 run that was 63rd overall.
Senior Connor Popp finished in 78th individually by running in 19:08.7, while Paul Radley rounded out the Lawrence group with a 19:26.7.
The Lawrence girls competed in the maroon 5K and placed 26th out of 44 teams, scoring 661 points.
Senior Andie Garrett led the Lions with a 21:02.5, which was the 17th-fastest run in the maroon 5K race. Sophomore Chloe Griffith came second on the team with a 23:01.5 run that placed her 105th, and senior Juliet Outka ran the race in 24:06.3 for 177th individually.
Sophomore Annabella Ackerman finished in 24:28.7 for 201st, while junior Hayley Swart ran for 221st with a time of 24:47.6. Sophomore Tessa Sanders rounded out the team with a 25:41.7 run.
The Lions will run on more familiar courses for the remainder of the cross-country season. Lawrence will race at Rim Rock Farm twice before racing there for both Sunflower League meet and the state meet. Other than Rim Rock Farm, the Lions will race at Haskell Indian Nations University and Shawnee North Community Center.
Lawrence will be at Rim Rock Farm on Friday, Sept. 26 for the next race.
Free State wins Baldwin Invitational girls cross-country race; boys place third
Free State’s girls cross-country team won the Baldwin Invitational on Saturday at Baldwin Golf Course, beating four other teams including the third-place Baldwin Bulldogs.
Taylor Hulcher was the overall runner-up with a time of 20:04.33, while Eloise Frye took sixth with a 20:31.69 run. Mady Whitney came one spot behind Frye, finishing the race in 20:46.71.
Nadia Karapuda finished 10th in the race with a 21:07.14 time, and Julia Velasco came just behind her with a time of 21:16.05 for 11th. Aleia Kemp and Addyson Tenbrick rounded out the team with a 13th overall finish at 21:21.54 and a 14th place finish at 21:25.26, respectively.
For the Bulldogs, Irelyn Kennedy led the team with a ninth-place finish in 21:02.46. Madeline Massey finished second on the team by running in 22:08.09, which was 19th overall. Claire Watkins and Britton Ediger came in 25th and 26th, respectively, as Watkins ran in 22:41.11 and Ediger finished in 22:41.22.
Rosalia Jenkins rounded out Baldwin’s top five by finishing 29th in 22:45.77, and Maylee Butterfield ran for 32nd at 23:22.59.
For the boys race, Free State placed third among six teams, while Baldwin finished sixth.
Jasper Hansen Terry led the way for the Firebirds by taking fourth individually with a 17:10.09 time. Nicholas Johnson and Anderson Bateman finished in the top 10, as Johnson placed seventh at 17:16.84 and Bateman came in ninth at 17:27.48.
Isaac Horner’s 17:55.08 run time put him fourth on the team and 16th overall, while Kyle Sikes placed one spot on the leaderboard behind him with a 17:58.69 time. Moses Minor rounded out the group by placing 19th at 18:12.03.
Landon Whaley led Baldwin by finishing 27th overall in 18:55.55. Spencer Carr came second on the team with a 19:26.15 run that put him 31st individually, while Ty Flory placed 33rd by running in 19:36.96.
Kasey Hamrick placed 38th by finishing in 20:23.55, with Wyatt Burnham finishing right behind at 20:26.14. Cole Stultz finished 40th at 20:29.89, rounding out the team’s top six runners.
Free State and Baldwin will both be at Rim Rock Farm on Saturday for their next cross-country meet.
