Lawrence and Free State each send 3 wrestlers to second day of 6A girls state wrestling tournament

Overland Park — Six wrestlers between Lawrence and Free State advanced to the second day of the 6A Kansas state girls wrestling tournament on Friday.

After day 1, Lawrence is 23rd with 10.0 team points, and Free State is 25th with 6.0 points.

Lawrence brought six wrestlers for the tournament, while Free State brought three. Both schools will have three wrestlers compete on the second day of the tournament after securing wins on the first day.

Sophomore Paige Fishburn from Lawrence got a win from a medical forfeit in her first consolation bout and will wrestle on day two. Lawrence junior Goldy Stephens started with a 16-second pin in her first match but lost in the quarterfinals and will compete in the consolation bracket on Saturday.

Free State senior Delaney Earl got a pin in her second match of the day to move on to the second consolation round. Lawrence senior Reann Rodriguez similarly got a pin in her first consolation match to move on to the second round on Saturday in the 125-pound weight class.

Senior Firebird Daijah Preston started the tournament with a 12-5 decision win to reach the quarterfinals. She lost with a second-period pin and will continue through the consolation bracket on Saturday. Fellow Firebird junior Madilyn Peirson lost her first match in the 190-pound bracket but got an 8-1 decision win to move to the second consolation round.

Lawrence freshman Anabella Ackerman lost two tournament matches in the 110-pound weight class. Sophomore Yamirra Woods lost her first two matches in the 130-pound weight class, and senior Avery Preston finished her season with two losses on the first day in the 135-pound bracket.

Day two of the state tournament will continue at AdventHealth Sports Park in Overland Park, starting at 9 a.m.
