Free State sends 9 wrestlers to second day of 6A state boys wrestling tournament, Lawrence sends 2

Overland Park — After the first day of the 6A state boys wrestling tournament, Free State ranks seventh with 60.0 points, while Lawrence is 19th with 13.0 points.

The Firebirds brought a school record 12 wrestlers to the tournament, and the Lions brought three. Nine Firebirds and two Lions are still alive for the second day of the tournament on Saturday.

Free State senior Quinton Hice started with a 45-second pin in the 106-pound bracket but lost in the quarterfinals. Senior Michael Hernandez started the day with a pin but lost in the quarterfinals in a 4-0 decision. Both Free State seniors will compete on the consolation side of the bracket on the second day.

Lawrence junior Lou Elsten started the tournament with a pin and a technical fall to reach the semifinal round of the 120-pound weight class. He lost on a last-minute pin but is a win away from the consolation finals.

In the 132-pound weight class, Free State senior Drew Streeter started with a win after an injury forfeit before losing in a 4-1 decision in the quarterfinals. Sophomore Firebird Coghlan Odom lost his first match in the 138-pound bracket but will continue on day two after winning his first consolation match with a pin. Senior Otto Reese also lost in the quarterfinal and will battle through the consolation side of the 144-pound bracket on Saturday.

Free State senior Gabe Swoyer lost his first match in the 157-pound bracket but won his second to stay alive in the tournament. Fellow Firebird senior Grayson Hagen started with two pins to reach the semifinal bout of the 165-pound weight class, where he won in a 1-0 decision. Hagen will wrestle for the championship against Olathe South’s Jovani Caudill.

Free State junior Zane Shaw beat Lawrence junior Jadin Harrell in an 11-5 decision in the first round of the 190-pound weight class. Shaw won his next match in a 16-7 major decision to reach the semifinals, which he lost by a pin. Harrell bounced back to win his first consolation match with a technical fall.

Senior Firebird Blaine Larkin started with a pin before losing in the quarterfinals of the 215-pound weight class with a pin. He will start day two on the consolation side of the bracket.

Lawrence’s Logan Druen lost his first two matches in the 106-pound weight class to wrap up his freshman campaign. Free State sophomore Tristen Moore lost his first two matches in the 126-pound bracket to finish his season. Sophomore Hudson Andrew from Free State lost both matches in the 150-pound bracket.

Day 2 of the tournament starts at 9 a.m. at AdventHealth Sports Park in Overland Park.
