Lenexa — The Free State and Lawrence boys swimming and diving teams concluded their season with the final day of the 6A state meet at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center.
Free State finished 13th as a team with 65 points, and Lawrence came in 17th with 47 points.
For relays, the Free State 200-yard medley team was disqualified. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Anderson Bateman, senior Lucas Fearn, junior Owen Carnagey and senior Jack Kempf finished 11th in one minute, 31.57 seconds. The same team placed eighth in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:21.82.
Free State coach Janna Skinner said the team had some upsets in the preliminary races but bounced back strong on the final day. A lot of that is thanks to the relationships on the team.
“Our team is closer this year than they have been in a while, and I think it showed in our relays,” Skinner said. “Our 400 relay was four seconds faster than our relay last year. Our 200 relay was two seconds faster than last year, and our medley was two seconds faster. They really came together.”
Lawrence’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Lawson Donly, senior Ike Adams, junior Alex Oral and senior Ryan Lane placed 13th with a time of 1:33.75. That same team finished 13th in 3:27.26 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Lions moved on the leaderboard in their relays on the final day.
Lawrence senior Ryan Lane had a standout day in his two individual races. He finished as the runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle with a 21.21-second time. Later, Lane finished third in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.51 seconds, which was 0.03 seconds away from a school record.
“I was honestly surprised because yesterday didn’t go too great for me,” Lane said. “I’m really happy with my performance today, especially the 50. That was a huge drop from where it was.”
Lane wrapped up his senior year on the all-state team. He said he will have many great memories of this meet, from making all-state to placing second and third to hanging out with his teammates.
“My favorite swimming experience of my life is high school swimming,” Lane said. “I love these guys. They’re my best friends, and I’m going to remember them forever.”
Free State freshman Gavin McIntosh finished his first year of diving 12th in the state with 334.85 points. Skinner said McIntosh has already talked with her about his diving plan for the summer.
“I know he’s going to put in a lot of work in the offseason,” Skinner said. “He works extremely hard, and he really does want to improve a lot. He’s just new to diving.”
Mattes reached the podium by placing sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:01.19, which was a personal best. Mattes placed 12th in the 200-yard individual medley after finishing in 2:05.32. He shaved off 0.27 seconds between the preliminary and final races, bumping him up from 14th to 12th.
Bateman finished ninth in the 100-yard freestyle with a 48.97 second time. He is one of the core returners that Free State will have next year.
“He showed himself what he was capable of,” Skinner said of Bateman’s 100-yard freestyle race. “I’ve been telling him all season long he’s totally capable of going sub-50 (seconds). It’s taken him a while to believe he could, but now that he has gone sub-49 (seconds), I think he’s really pumped for it.”
Senior Sina Khosh took 14th in the 100-yard backstroke with a 57.02 second time. Khosh broke his hand earlier in the season and only had two weeks back in the water before the state meet. He still turned in a season-best performance in the backstroke, which Skinner said was as well as he could’ve done given the time away from the pool.
