Free State advances 7 swimmers, Lawrence 4 to third day of 6A boys state swim and dive meet

Lenexa — The second day of the KSHSAA 6A state swim and dive meet featured Lawrence and Free State swimmers competing in preliminary races ahead of the final day on Saturday.

The top 16 times from each event qualified for the finals. Free State qualified in seven events with seven qualifying swimmers, and Lawrence qualified in four with four swimmers.

Free State qualified all three relay teams, and Lawrence qualified its 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.

The Firebirds’ 200-yard medley relay placed 10th after finishing in one minute, 41.98 seconds with Sina Khosh, Ari Mattes, Sebastian Iversen and Anderson Bateman. Their 200-yard freestyle relay team of Bateman, Lucas Fearn, Owen Carnagey and Jack Kempf also finished 10th in 1:32.33. The Lions’ relay team placed 15th, with Lawson Donly, Ike Adams, Alex Oral and Ryan Lane finishing in 1:34.74.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Firebirds took ninth with Bateman, Fearn, Carnagey and Kempf at 3:24.20. The Lions placed 12th with Donly, Adams, Oral and Lane finishing in 3:28.02.

Mattes qualified for the finals in the 200-yard individual medley by finishing 14th with a 2:05.59 time. He later qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke after finishing sixth in 1:01.59. Bateman finished ninth in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.37 seconds. Khosh qualified in the 100-yard backstroke with a 57.87-second time.

Lane finished sixth in the 100-yard freestyle at 48.26 seconds and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.91 seconds.

There were a few other swimmers from both schools who weren’t able to qualify for the third day in individual races. Lawrence’s 200-yard individual medley team of Adams, Hugo Cowardin, Aiden Bierschbach and Donly finished 21st in 1:54.10.

Free State’s Carnagey placed 19th in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 1:53.84, and Fearn swam the same race in 1:56.73, which was 24th. Carnagey also swam the 100-yard freestyle, finishing 28th in 53.41 seconds. Kempf tied for 23rd in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.31 seconds and 25th in the 100-yard freestyle at 52.03 seconds. Asher Zelvy swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.28 for 22nd.

For Lawrence, Oral finished 22nd in the 100-yard butterfly at 57.38 seconds and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.28 for 19th.

The swimmers will join Free State diver Gavin McIntosh for the third and final day of the 6A state meet at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center on Saturday. The meet will begin at 9 a.m.
