Lawrence softball (8-2) got its third straight win with a 15-0 run-rule victory over Shawnee Mission Northwest on Monday in Lawrence.
“We have done what we should’ve done (the last three games),” Lawrence coach Mike Byrn said. “We’re getting better, and we’re still growing. Every day, there’s something new for us to get better at.”
The Lions got two outs in the first two at-bats in the top of the first inning. The Cougars got two hits from their third and fourth batters, but a groundout to senior first baseman Lydia Folks at first base brought the third out.
Sophomore Julia Norris pitched all three innings for the Lions and allowed three hits and one walk against two strikeouts. She threw 43 pitches in the game.
Lawrence accrued 11 runs in the bottom of the first, setting the team up to secure the run-rule win early. Senior shortstop Harper Dye singled as the leadoff hitter, and freshman center fielder Zoey Barber walked to move Dye to second. Senior third baseman Maddy Crawford singled to bring in the first run, and Folks walked after Crawford’s hit to load the bases.
The Lions got two walks back-to-back to score two more runs. Sophomore second baseman Keira Norris doubled, bringing in the fourth and fifth runs of the inning. The Lions loaded the bases again with a walk, and junior left fielder Reese Dannevik singled to bring in the sixth run. Dye had her second plate appearance of the inning and was hit by a pitch, bringing Norris home. Barber singled, which brought in two more runs, and Crawford walked before Folks hit a two-RBI double for the 11th run.
After another walk, the Cougars got the first out of the inning on an infield fly. Folks and senior runner Olivia Dennis were called out for leaving the base path early, giving the Cougars the second and third outs.
The Lions got three outs in four batters in the top of the second inning, with Julia Norris throwing her second strikeout. Dannevik recorded the only hit of the second inning, while the Cougars finished with a groundout and two flyouts.
Dannevik led the team with two hits, but the hitting on the day for the Lions was well-rounded. All but one batter recorded a hit, and everyone brought in a runner. Barber, Crawford and senior catcher Lili Spinelli tied for the team lead with two walks.
The Cougars got their third hit of the day in the top of the third but didn’t get anyone else on base. In the bottom of the third, Barber started with a walk, followed by a walk from Crawford. Folks reached first on an error that brought home Barber and Crawford. Spinelli doubled in the next at-bat to bring Folks home, and a double by junior right fielder Payge Cain with Keira Norris on third brought in the 15th and final run.
Lawrence’s 15 runs were the fifth time in 10 games the team has scored 10 or more runs and the second time the team has scored 15 runs.
The Lions host Olathe Northwest on Tuesday at 5 p.m. before hosting Washburn Rural at 3:30 p.m. and Spring Hill at 5:30 p.m. for a Thursday doubleheader.
“That’s a whole new beast tomorrow,” Byrn said. “We need to come with the same mentality and play it out like we did with Gardner-Edgerton when we beat them 13-11. We have to come out and swing it. We have to come out and show we’re better.”
