KSHSAA releases changes to regular-season durations for basketball, baseball and softball

The KSHSAA Board of Directors implemented some new changes at its meeting on Wednesday, most notably extending the number of games allowed in a regular season for multiple sports.

Basketball, baseball and softball all had their regular seasons extended in the board meeting.

KSHSAA changed the number of games a student can play in from 20 to 23 in basketball, starting in the 2025-26 season. For baseball and softball, players can now play in 32 games in total. Teams can schedule 26 varsity games and 20 non-varsity games a year, with players able to play in some combination of 32 of those 46 games. The baseball and softball changes will start this upcoming spring season in 2025.

The change for basketball came after the Kansas Coaches Association proposed the change to KSHSAA, which passed 36-25, according to a KSHSAA press release.

Another change is that no boy or girl wrestler can compete in more than four wrestling meets of any kind, whether it be a dual, tournament, etc., that begin before 3 p.m., starting this upcoming season.

Tennis players will now be able to compete in one non-KSHSAA event during the school year with KSHSAA approval, which is effective immediately. Further criteria on which events can be approved can be found at the KSHSAA website.
