Area Football Roundup: Tonganoxie clobbers Bonner Springs

Tonganoxie High quarterback Sam Kleidosty scored five touchdowns to lead the Chieftains to a 49-12 road rout of Bonner Springs on Friday night.

The Braves actually led this one 6-0 after scoring a touchdown on the opening drive of the game. But it was all Chieftains from there.

Kleidosty scored on runs of 3, 15, 6, 3 and 10 yards to lead the THS offense, and Colton Brusven scored on runs of 2 yards and 23 yards while the game went to a running clock late.

Jackson McWilliams handled the extra points for THS (3-4) and Jesse Young snagged a second-half interception that helped the Chieftains blow the game open.

Bonner Springs scored on a 72-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter to cut the THS lead to 14-12, but Kleidosty scored for the third time four minutes later and the rout was on.

THS will close out the regular season with a home game against Ottawa next Friday night.

Eudora falls late to Paola

A back-and-forth affair between Eudora and Paola went the way of the Panthers on Friday night, as a 2-point conversion try by Eudora with 1 minute to play came up just short in a 43-42 loss.

Paola took a 35-28 lead on an 11-yard touchdown run with 9:10 to play in the game and the Cardinals responded with a scoring drive that produced a touchdown with 2:18 to play.

Trailing by one after a TD run by Brayden Beerbower, EHS (3-4) elected to go for two and got it when quarterback Gage Hayden hit Jaden Hamm in the end zone to put the Cards up 36-35.

The Panthers answered with a quick-strike score 41 seconds later and got their own two-point conversion to go up 43-36 with 1:27 to play.

That set the stage for Eudora’s last attempt and the Cardinals delivered when Braylen Hoobler caught a TD pass from Hayden to pull the Cardinals within a point at 43-42.

EHS tried another two-point conversion for the win, but the try failed and Paola was able to run out the clock.

The Cardinals will close out the regular season at home next week against Spring Hill.

Bulldogs’ offense comes alive in loss to SFT

One week after scoring their first points of the season in a losing effort, the Baldwin Bulldogs exploded for four touchdowns in a 37-28 loss at Santa Fe Trail.

The loss dropped BHS to 0-7 on the season. Next up, Baldwin will close out the regular season with a road game at Osawatomie.

Hayden handles Perry-Lecompton

What was just a 13-point deficit at halftime turned troublesome in the second half, as the Perry-Lecompton High football team fell at Topeka Hayden 46-18.

The Kaws (4-3) trailed just 19-6 at the break, but watched Hayden explode for a 21-point fourth quarter to roll to victory.

The Kaws’ lone first-half TD came on a 3-yard touchdown run by quarterback Gunnar Ball. Ball scored again from six yards out in the second half and Ryeki Tuley scored on a 4-yard run to cap off the PLHS scoring.

The Kaws will close out the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday with a road trip to Santa Fe Trail.
