Lawrence High sophomore Amaya Marshall (5) shoots a jump shot over Shawnee Mission North defenders Baylee Dooliin (11) and Anna Harrison (33) during a game Wednesday night at LHS on Jan. 20, 2021.

The second quarter sunk the Lawrence High’s girls basketball team in its 50-25 road loss to Olathe South on Tuesday.

After trailing 9-5 following the opening period, the Lions (2-9, 1-5 Sunflower League) managed just one point in the entire second quarter. It was scored by Amaya Marshall, who paced the team with 6 points along with Serenity Keo in the loss.

On the other end, Olathe South scored 15 points in the second period to create some cushion the rest of the way. Still, LHS head coach Jeff Dickson was pleased with his team’s fight in a usually tough place to play.

“Tonight we played with so much heart and tenacity,” Dickson said. “We have not caught any breaks this season and that’s OK. Lady Lions face adversity with a smile on our faces. There is no other place I’d rather be and there’s no group I’d rather build with than this tough, hardworking group.”

Lawrence will host Lansing at 7 p.m Wednesday.
