KSHSAA suspends start of spring sports for one week
There will not be spring sports for at least one week.
On Sunday, KSHSAA announced that all spring sports and activities are suspended through March 22 due to the threat of coronavirus. It includes cancelation of all practices and events during the opening week of the spring sports season.
“Please note spring sports team members are prohibited from club or outside team participation and practice during this period,” KSHSAA wrote in a release. “Not only would such outside participation be contrary to handbook rule, it would be contrary to the very reason activities are canceled during the time we seek to mitigate potential transfer of the contagion.”
Lawrence public schools were already closed through March 29, which includes all school activities, practices and events being canceled. Both Free State and Lawrence High baseball teams were slated to begin play this week.
The Firebirds, who finished as runner-up in Class 6A a year ago, were scheduled to host Sioux Falls Washington. LHS, meanwhile, was supposed to compete in a tournament at Edmond Memorial High School in Oklahoma.
