Postseason soccer recap: Free State, Eudora eliminated in quarterfinals

Free State’s boys soccer team finished just shy of qualifying for the 6A state tournament.

FSHS suffered a 3-0 road loss Tuesday night to Wichita East in the Class 6A West Region finals, bringing an end to a strong season under first-year head coach Hussam Mohammed. The Firebirds finished the year with a 10-7-2 record and secured their first regional title in 10 years.

It marked the final high school soccer game for Free State seniors Nati Zicker, Hayden Robinson, Pete Junge, Ashton Owen, Peter Boncella, Parker Hodgson, Kadin Spiehs, Maksim Smith, Oliver Frankenfeld, Jacob Appleman and Nathan Herschell.

The Blue Aces, who were the top seed in the division, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half. Wichita East added a pair of scores in the second half en route to its 18th win in a row. With the win, the Blue Aces (18-1) earned a trip to the state tournament for the first time since 2014.

The Class 6A state tournament will take place in Hummer Sports Park in Topeka this weekend.

Eudora’s boys soccer team was also eliminated in the quarterfinals.

EHS dropped a 1-0 decision to Heritage Christian Academy at home Tuesday night. HCA scored the game’s only goal with 30:28 left in the match to earn a trip to the Class 4A-1A state tournament.

The Cardinals lost both of their meetings against HCA this year, as they were handed a 3-2 defeat on Oct. 14. Eudora finished the year with a 12-6-1 record and its first regional title in program history.
