State volleyball recap: Free State, Eudora eliminated on first day
The Free State volleyball team was ultimately eliminated on the first day of the Class 6A state tournament Friday night at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.
FSHS suffered three losses in as many matches to end its season with a 24-15 record under first-year head coach Jayme Savage. Free State, which was the eighth seed in its first trip to state since 2016, fell in two sets (25-13, 25-20) to top-seeded Garden City to begin the day.
The Firebirds then dropped both sets (25-14, 25-16) to No. 4 Blue Valley in the second match. Free State then fell in straight sets (25-19, 25-17) to No. 5 Blue Valley North to end the first day with a 0-3 clip.
In Class 4A, Eudora’s volleyball team went 1-2 on the first day in Hutchinson. EHS fell in straight sets to Circle (25-19, 25-22) to begin the day. The Cardinals bounced back with a 2-0 win (25-20, 25-17) over Independence before dropping a 2-1 decision (25-18, 25-17, 25-12) to Topeka Hayden. Eudora won the second set in its match with Hayden.
The Cardinals, who were the sixth seed, finished third in their pool to end their season with a 27-15 record.
