FSHS team, LHS individual advance to 6A state boys golf tournament

Free State’s entire boys golf team punched its ticket to the 6A state tournament Monday afternoon at the Wamego Country Club.

The Firebirds shot a 324 as a team, claiming a runner-up finish at their regional meet. Washburn Rural, the event winner, finished with a 305. Lawrence High finished sixth out of eight teams with a 496 team score.

FSHS senior Landon Berquist was the individual champion at the regional meet, carding a 72 on a par-70 course. He finished two strokes better than a pair of Washburn Rural golfers.

In addition, junior Andrew Park claimed fourth with a 77 score for Free State. Junior Mitchell Spriggs came in 12th with an 86, while senior Dylan Sommer placed 16th with an 89. Junior William Gard notched 20th with a 92 and sophomore Nathan Pilakowski ended up in 25th with an 106.

Lawrence High senior Ross Brungardt is returning to the 6A state tournament as the lone qualifier for his team. Brungardt netted ninth on the individual leaderboard, shooting an 82 to crack the top-10.

The 6A state tournament will take place at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton on May 20.
