Behind another strong defensive showing, Kansas was victorious in a top-20 matchup Saturday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

No. 2 Kansas picked up right where it left off following last week’s run through the Maui Invitational. As was the case last week, the Jayhawks were impressive on the defensive end for much of their 72-58 win over No. 20 Colorado.

KU has now won seven games in a row since falling to Duke in the Champions Classic. Dayton is the only team to score more than 66 points against Kansas this season. Colorado, meanwhile, is now 7-1 after suffering its first loss of the season.

The Buffaloes, who never led on Saturday, have now lost 30 consecutive meetings with the Jayhawks in Allen Fieldhouse. In a series which dates back to 1931, Kansas is now 124-40 all-time against Colorado.

Ochai Agbaji paced Kansas with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Devon Dotson (18) and Udoka Azubuike (12) joined him in double figures in the win. Evan Battey led Colorado with 14 points in a losing effort.

Here’s a quick look back at some of the action:

•Udoka’s putback: Nothing gets the crowd excited quite like a dunk by Udoka Azubuike.

Fresh off winning co-MVP honors in the Maui Invitational, Azubuike gifted Kansas fans with a strong slam early in the game against Colorado. It came after he didn’t really touch the ball for the first handful of possession against Colorado’s zone defense.

But a team can only hope to delay a flush by Azubuike for so long. With 14:56 left in the first half, Azubuike netted his first bucket of the night on a putback dunk.

• Dotson’s finish: Devon Dotson, KU’s other co-MVP from the Maui Invitational, made a number of impressive plays against the Buffaloes Saturday night.

Similar to Azubuike and his frequent dunks, Dotson’s ability to finish at the rim is a staple to his game. And one such play in the first half against Colorado was one of Dotson’s better drives thus far during his sophomore season.

Midway through the first half, Dotson went coast-to-coast for an easy layup. It gave the Jayhawks a 17-9 advantage during what turned out to be a decisive 9-0 run by the hosts.

• Defensive highlight: A different game, but the same story.

Marcus Garrett was once again phenomenal on the defensive end in another tough matchup. Entering Saturday, Colorado’s leading scorer Tyler Bey was sixth in the National Player of the Year rankings via KenPom. Garrett held him to 0 points on 0 field goal attempts through the first 18 minutes of action.

Bey’s first shot attempt came with 1:28 left in the first half, which was a badly missed triple against Tristan Enaruna.

• Key stat: It was clear from the start what Colorado was trying to do in a top-20 matchup in Allen Fieldhouse.

Even though KU’s defense has been stellar to start the season, CU thought it could exploit its opponent by taking more shots from beyond the arc. The Buffaloes fired nine 3-point attempts within the first eight minutes alone, which matched their total number of triple attempts in an entire game against Loyola Marymount earlier this week.

Entering Saturday, Colorado ranked 264th in the nation in 3-point attempt percentage via KenPom.
