Letter to the editor: Fighting irrational fears
To the editor:
The Journal-World’s reporting on the lawsuit against SB 244, which restricts what bathrooms trans people can use, clearly shows this law only shields cis folks from emotional distress sparked by their irrational fears while contributing to physical and emotional stress for trans folks. Cis women are not in danger from trans women in women’s bathrooms. It is transgendered people who legitimately fear violence. I recommend watching the 1999 movie “Boys Don’t Cry,” which tells the true story of the murder of Brandon Teena, a Nebraskan trans man (who was played by Hillary Swank). Since 1999, Trans Day of Remembrance (Nov. 20) has been an annual observance honoring the lives of hundreds of trans people lost annually to violence, both murder and suicide.
