Letter to the editor: Stand up to ICE

To the editor:

During the campaign, Trump promised mass deportation. The Republican Party supported mass deportation. Fast forward to today, and Republican lawmakers are still apparently on board, even though “mass deportation” now means reigning terror on American cities.

ICE agents are literally hunting people down, based on the color of their (brown) skin, and violently ripping them from their homes, families, cars, jobs, and communities. These people are not the worst of the worst — a majority of people ICE agents detain have no criminal convictions. As a proud American, watching videos of ICE agents brutalize (and now kill) law-abiding people–people picking up their kids from school or simply walking to the grocery store–is gut wrenching. But Republicans in Congress are more worried about pleasing Trump than reigning in ICE–an out-of-control, dangerous federal agency that is recklessly assaulting and detaining people in American cities every day.

Most Americans oppose the Trump regime’s dangerous use of ICE in our communities, and we have power, so let’s use that power. Keep protesting — remember protesting is in our DNA. If you see ICE agents in your community, alert your vulnerable community members and keep filming. Tell Senators Jerry Moran (202-224-6521) and Roger Marshall (202-224-4774) and Representative Tracey Mann (202-225-2715) to push for an appropriations bill that puts serious restrictions on ICE. Then, in November, vote Marshall and Mann out. Let’s send a message to the Trump regime that we will not stand for ICE agents reigning terror on our fellow community members.
