Letter to the editor: Congressional cheerleaders

To the editor:

The Congress has now officially ceded to the president its constitutional functions of levying taxes, directing spending and deciding matters of war and peace. The president himself has acknowledged publicly that there remain no institutional checks upon his power. The one remaining role of the legislative branch is, apparently, to cheer on the exploits of the executive branch. Well, in that case, there is a far less wasteful (take note, Mr. Musk) and more professional option close at hand. The Washington Commanders did not make the postseason, so their cheerleading corps is presently idle and, given the rising cost of living, no doubt would be grateful for some off-season employment. I propose that the president immediately dissolve the Congress and replace its members with the Commanders’ cheerleaders. Who can dispute that Congress (the average member is 59 years old) is in need of some younger faces and — when it comes to cheerleading — would be greatly improved by some younger legs? Certainly not this president. I have no pride of authorship in this plan. Watching it happen would be reward enough for me.

Dan V. Johnson,

Lawrence
