To the editor:

I wasn’t even aware that Lawrence had a “Sustainability Board,” and was dumbfounded that we are paying city employees to seriously discuss how to encourage Lawrence residents to avoid idling in their cars when transporting their children to and from school (“Ideas to curb idling cars drive meeting,” LJW, 28 Aug). That train left the station long ago.

Over the past 50-plus years, Lawrence residents (yes, you and I) have helped to create a transportation infrastructure predicated on the automobile. I sympathize with those parents who are reluctant to allow their children to walk or bike to school. Simply too dangerous. Yet there might still be hope. Thanks to our Fearless Leader, gasoline prices may soon skyrocket, and residents might see the wisdom of walking or biking to school.
