Letter to the editor: Parade organizers thank community
To the editor:
A heartfelt thank you, Lawrence, for turning out for and supporting the Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade. It takes an army to produce this tradition, which is one of a kind. I want to recognize and thank each of the groups that make it happen: the Lawrence Police Department, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Douglas County Fairgrounds staff, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, and the group of outriders (true cowhands) who come from Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma and Kansas to escort participants through the parade route. These folks along with our parade committee and volunteers work behind the scenes to ensure the parade flows smoothly and safely from start to finish.
Thank you, spectators, for being respectful of the chalk line and keeping everyone safe. Our entrants drive or ride “gentle giants” that do not participate in parades on a regular basis, especially not ones with hundreds of cheering fans. Entrants tell us that this is by far the largest event they participate in. Your warmth and appreciation mean the world to them. They consistently praise Lawrence’s hospitality.
I want to thank the City of Lawrence and all the local businesses and individuals whose generous donations make this event possible. You can find the full list of them at lawrencechristmasparade.org. Please thank them as you patronize their businesses or see them around town.
Mark your calendars for the 32nd edition of the parade on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, at 11 a.m. We can’t wait to celebrate with you again!
Marty Kennedy,
President, Lawrence Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade Inc.
