Letter: Abortion is regulated

To the Editor:

This is in response to July 26 letter “I support the amendment”, that would remove the right to abortion in our Kansas Constitution and allow the legislature to ban abortion.

Those in support of this amendment say there are no regulations regarding abortion. However, the Kansas Board of Healing Arts regulates all medical facilities, doctors, procedures, and prescriptions, including those medical clinics and doctors who provide abortions.

Numerous abortion regulations stand in Kansas: banning abortion after 22 weeks, requiring parental approval, no tax dollars spent unless to save the life of the woman, 24 hour wait, required information and ultrasound, no telemedicine for abortion pills, and more. None of these enacted regulations have been challenged in the three years since the Kansas Supreme Court found the right to privacy included bodily autonomy. The court’s decision allows for restrictions which are in the state’s interest.

One in four of U.S. women have an abortion. People weigh their physical, mental, financial, and personal circumstances in making their decisions. None of these decisions are made better by governmental intrusion. I voted No.
