Letter to the editor: Wasting our money

To the editor:

The city wants homeowners to repair public sidewalks and to pay to use the rec centers. The city wants to raise taxes and utility rates. City commissioners wanted a big raise. There are a lot of families having a tough time. Those who raise taxes say we need the money. I say stop wasting what you have. Bicycle boulevards? If bikers want this, put a tag on your bike and pay taxes like a car. A tunnel under 19th Street when a bridge two blocks could solve the problem for free? The city cannot afford the rec center at Rock Chalk Park. The library is an event center that will never break even. The problem we have in Lawrence is our leaders do not have the discipline to say “no, we can’t afford it” and will not use common sense.

I want to see the study that justifies spending any money on the bike boulevard or the tunnel.
