Letter to the editor: His handmaids need to go

To the editor:

I refer to our Kansas GOP congressional delegation as Trump’s “handmaids,” because, like the unfortunate characters in Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” they have either reluctantly or eagerly let themselves be impregnated with Trump’s lawless, anti-American policies, and helped bring those policies to term.

Such policies include ignoring lawful court orders; murdering people in international waters; impounding congressionally mandated funds; using the Department of Justice as his personal tool of revenge; pardoning Jan. 6 insurrectionists; giving access to Americans’ personal data to Elon Musk and his unqualified team; deportations without due process; taking congressionally mandated food benefits from children; likely illegal tariffs that have stripped the livelihoods of Kansas farmers; using the office for corruption on a scale of billions; attempted voter suppression and more; actually a scandal or two a day.

When we elect a criminal president, we should expect criminal actions. But from our Legislature we have a right to expect they will stand to protect American values of honesty, justice and democracy, unless they’re the criminal president’s handmaids. Sens. Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall; and Reps. Tracey Mann, Derek Schmidt and Ron Estes have bowed down in cowardice and corruption before this tyrant to the detriment of their nation, state and constituents.

That’s why I refer to them as Trump’s handmaids, a nickname they have earned a thousand times over. They must be voted out at the earliest opportunity and replaced with men and women, like Rep. Sharice Davids, who understand that they represent Kansas and not a criminal.

Gary Henry,

Lawrence
