Letter to the editor: No decency
To the editor:
Consider the recent, lavish back-to-back weekend parties at Mar-a-Lago featuring beef filet and seared scallops, ice sculptures, an opera performance, and synchronized swimmers performing to “God Bless the USA.” Judicial Watch estimates that it costs $1 million for each of the president’s frequent trips to Mar-a-Lago, including $250,000 for Secret Service, approximately $142,000 for Air Force One, and Coast Guard involvement due to the estate’s proximity to the ocean.
Compare that to concurrent efforts of the administration to withhold Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from 42 million Americans who rely on the program; to discontinue Affordable Care Act tax credits which have made health care coverage affordable for 22 million Americans who will now see their premiums double or quadruple — and cause many to join the uninsured; and a POTUS who states, “I don’t want to hear about affordability,” and then proposes 50-year mortgages as housing prices soar.
In this context, I borrow a question asked by Attorney Joseph Welch of Sen. Joseph McCarthy in 1954. I ask it now of the president, and Sens. Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall, and my representative, Tracey Mann, who support the administration’s cruel and reckless policies.
“Have you no sense of decency?”
Dot Nary,
Lawrence
