Letter to the editor: Don’t normalize inhumanity
To the editor:
In Tuesday’s paper, Randi Hacker made a heartfelt plea for people to come together against nuclear tests. She wrote, “Whether or not you agree that abortion should be legalized; whether or not you agree that Jews will replace you; whether or not you agree that windmills cause cancer or that climate change is a hoax or that Chicago is a war zone; whether or not you voted for Donald J. Trump…” I’m sorry, but one of those things is not like the others. One of those things dehumanizes an entire group of people. One of those things has led to mass murder and mass displacement. Placing anti-Semitism in that sort of list normalizes it. It becomes relatively benign, a belief among others that friends can disagree on. It is not. Anti-Semitism, racism, sexism, xenophobia, etc. — dehumanizing beliefs should never be normalized. Never.
