Letter to the editor: No cuts to SNAP, Medicaid

To the editor:

Our senators need to receive calls from us, resisting any cuts to SNAP and Medicaid in the budget reconciliation bill. One in 16 of our Kansas neighbors rely on SNAP to prevent hunger for themselves and their families.

But even with the SNAP program we have today, 47 million people in the U.S. still face food insecurity, including 9.4 million children. Hunger is a moral issue for all of us. People of faith and all people of goodwill agree that no child or family should go hungry especially in the richest nation in the world.

SNAP Is a lifeline for our rural communities. SNAP participants have fewer hospitalizations, lower health care costs and reduce need for other forms of public assistance. Children with SNAP benefits are at lower risk for developmental problems, child abuse and neglect, and have a better educational achievement outcomes.

Tell Sen. Jerry Moran and Sen. Roger Marshall: Don’t be the vote that takes food from our families.

Food for families or tax handouts for billionaires: Who’s side are you on?

Jean Drumm,
