Letter to the editor: Support HINU Act

To the editor:

In December 2024, Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., and Rep. Tracey Mann, R-Kan., proposed federal legislation in the Haskell Indian Nations University Improvement Act. This proposed legislation’s purpose highlights the importance of the U.S. government fulfilling its trust and treaty responsibility to Native Americans. It also clarifies Haskell’s charitable organization tax status and independence from the Bureau of Indian Education.

The BIE has mismanaged Haskell and thus imperiled Native American beneficiary Indian education treaty rights. This serious mismanagement has been documented in congressional hearings. The HINU Improvement Act would establish congressional accountability in Haskell’s operations and management instead of being led by the non-responsive BIE.

The HINU Improvement Act requires enactment by Congress. I urge you to please contact Sen. Moran and Rep. Mann to voice your support of the HINU Act. Haskell’s future as a viable, vibrant university depends on it.
