Letter to the editor: Density suspicions

To the editor:

I have been reading with interest those quoted and making comments in the media who are promoting the increased density and saying this will create affordable housing for all. When I attended the planning meetings, there were no studies produced to support if this new code will achieve any of the goals set, such as affordable housing. So, we as a city will try it and will edit the code as needed or residents can have the choice to move out of the city.

I suggest that others look up the quantity, value and location of properties owned by some of these supporters, including commission members. For the ones that are current landlords of houses, if they have more renters in the house, this is likely to increase their income. Landlords will need to cover for the additional wear and tear on their houses, and I suspect that the owner will do this through increased rent and or deposits as they are businesspeople. This may in turn increase the value of the house, thus decreasing the availability of affordable housing for Lawrence residents. This is good for whom?

I encourage you to watch the various planning commission meetings on the city’s YouTube channel. It may show you how some members regarded the residents’ and other commission members’ concerns.

As my niece reminded me recently, follow the money.

Pam Burkhead,

Lawrence
