Letter to the editor: Don’t tolerate abuse, bullying
To the editor:
I read with real concern about the city commissioners being bullied and abused while performing the city’s work.
What is wrong with Lawrence authorities who apparently feel powerless in the face of threats, fear and trauma? What do we model for our children when we show them that the way to deal with abuse is to keep your mouth shut and hide because no one will address this treatment?
Isn’t it time to hold these bullies accountable for their gross and dangerous behavior? Words have power! Fear for personal safety must be addressed. Hateful, racist speech cannot be met with silence. Victimization of city commissioners and other citizens of Lawrence cannot become the norm. In this case our entire community suffers because we cannot speak openly about threats and hatred and expect to be protected.
