Letter to the editor: Idea for park

To the editor:

My congratulations to Graham Kreicker for his inspired recommendation (in his recent letter to the editor) to the city for Robinson Park sans “the rock.”

The red boulder that had been the centerpiece of the park has been sent back to its rightful owners, and that is a good thing. It also seems like a good idea to replace the boulder with an informational kiosk and the original plaque that commemorated our founders from New England. And I love the idea of using the magnificent Phoenix sculpture to act as a replacement centerpiece for the park.

But consider this idea: Commission someone like the late sculptor Jim Brothers, the Lawrence native who made the Phoenix sculpture, to create a statue of Charles Robinson as the centerpiece of the park — a bigger than life, full figure of Robinson, maybe standing in the bow of a boat, as a lasting and more appropriate symbol.

For a city that honors its free state history, and a city that likes to promote art, the idea seems intuitive. I hope Mr. Kreicker and the city father would concur.

Tim Hamill,

Lawrence
