Letter to the editor: Inflation truth

To the editor:

As an editor of a newspaper with integrity, I am sure you would not intentionally mislead your readers.

I would like to point out that in your newspaper I often see a misleading description concerning inflation.

Over and over I read in your newspaper that “inflation is falling.” The truth is inflation is not falling; the truth is the rate of inflation is falling. That is a whole different ballgame. In fact, prices are not going up as fast as they were but they are certainly not coming down. Has rent gone down? How about insurance, has it gone down? How about your utilities, have they gone down? We all know food prices are sky high and they are not going down.

Even my favorite reporter, Chad Lawhorn, began his column about property values with saying “Inflation is down …” I’m sure he didn’t mean to mislead your readers but when the phrase is used over and over it gains traction and the lie spreads. Your readers deserve the truth.

These days it is hard to know what is true and what is not. It would be a breath of fresh air if you would set the record straight on this matter. After all, that is your job.

Clarice Dengel,

Ottawa
