Letter to the editor: Raising taxes now?

To the editor:

With the rising cost of groceries, gas, rent, utilities, etc., and where many rely upon fixed incomes or are working at low-paying jobs, this Lawrence taxpayer does not understand why city leaders want to raise taxes to create a generous rainy-day fund. It is doubly incomprehensible after reading that our country’s national debt is now approaching $36 trillion. Why such fiscal profligacy in Washington and such guarded financing at the city level? I’m no economist, but fear that at some point this contradiction will have catastrophic consequences.

Ray Finch,

Lawrence
