Letter to the editor: Reconsider arts cuts

To the editor:

In recent reporting regarding the cuts in fine arts in the Lawrence school district, I see a few points that are omitted.

1. The fine arts may be enjoyed for one’s entire lifetime. Some sports may be enjoyed for a long time (such as running, badminton and perhaps tennis) but football isn’t one of them. Painting, acting, making music, photography, acting, textile arts, etc., may be lifetime endeavors.

2. Both sports and fine arts can be team-building experiences, but the fact that music uses all portions of the brain is often overlooked. Not only taking in the music upon hearing it, but our emotions are stimulated and synchronized. Memories are brought to the forefront (hearing one of your favorites from various times in your life brings recall of the lyrics, memories and emotions), and rhythms move you to begin dancing or tapping your foot or fingers!

Please reconsider the defunding of the arts in Lawrence schools, and let’s re-invest in our future, a lifetime of arts that we all enjoy!

Lawrence
