Letter to the editor: Don’t waste people

To the editor:

George Will recently made some good points about the abundance of life today. I don’t want to go into a long argument, but I would like to point out that sometimes people need some “progressive” help if they want to tap into this abundance.

My husband has cerebral palsy. His parents insisted he have every opportunity, and he faced the world with his newly minted degree from the University of Kansas.

There were the people who said flat out “we don’t hire the handicapped,” while others clearly couldn’t see past the shaky hands or the awkward walk. (He did eventually retire from the state).

Since we are honoring Bob Dole this year, we should remember that this staunch conservative fought for the acceptance of people with disabilities. He said that conservatives hate waste — including the waste of people’s talents and ability.

Let’s keep the best of conservative ideas and any other ideas that help our fellow Americans.
