Letter to the editor: Protect kids and bus riders

To the editor:

No child attending public schools should be scared to go to school or leave at the end of the day.

Yesterday, two teens came into the downtown store where I work. Neither of them had on coats. The temp in the 30s. They said they got off a city bus a block away because they were being harassed/threatened/bullied by other teens on the bus. They informed us that there are two competing gangs at both Lawrence high schools and the gangs threaten those on the other side as well as those kids trying to stay neutral and focused on school.

Some of the threatening teens have been expelled but they hang out near the schools to attack in various ways the other gang or neutral teens at the end of the school day.

What are Lawrence schools and police doing about this? What is the city doing to make sure bus riders are safe?

Donna Bergmann,

Lawrence
