Letter to the editor: Rational people must prevail

To the editor:

I am furious about the attack on Mr. Pelosi! This violence must stop!

This country became a leader because we believed in ballots instead of bullets. Now Trumplicans and others are preaching violence because they know for a minority violence is the only way to succeed.

This righteousness encourages other crazies. Somehow this is getting involved with a new white “Christian Nationalism.” The warped idea is that as Christian Americans, they have the right to force people their way because God is on their side. It is a horrible misreading of Christianity! The recorded account is that in His greatest tribulation, Jesus told his follower to put away his sword and surrendered to the Romans. Violence is the absolute opposite of this country’s way and will fail as it did in 1865.

We rational people must vote and try to maintain an ordered society. Two articles in Saturday’s paper heartened me: Political scientist Michael Smith noted that the real past problem with Derek Schmidt is that he sat back and let Kobach usurp the power of the attorney general’s office and proceed with “antics.” In a letter to the editors, Bob Bechtel noted that we will soon decide “if we really value the benefits of democracy or realize how horrible it is to live in a dictatorship.” Mr. Bechtel, I totally agree and we must all vote to maintain our precious democracy. I weep too.
