Letter to the editor: Transparency on insurance

To the editor:

The showdown between LMH and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas has not been created by LMH. Transparency requires BCBS to share with our community what they are offering (per patient per specific treatment or intervention, per patient per hospital stay, per patient… etc.) and what their contracts are with other hospitals for identical services. What appears to be an insignificant amount per line item is the difference between LMH solvency (and being unable to pay comparable salaries to staff in what has become a highly competitive market.)

When my husband left KU, after 36 years, we were ‘directed’ to continue with BCBS as the most reliable, (seamless) coverage in his retirement. It took a few years for us to  consult a neutral health insurance market professional as to Medicare options. She quickly found us identical coverage at a significantly lower monthly cost. We’ve been on that coverage for two years and have zero issues.

You can change insurance provider or call BCBS with your input. I support our local hospital.
