Letter to the editor: Unresponsive lawmakers

To the editor:

As a member of a church environmental action team, I have always thought it useful to connect face to face with our legislative representatives. In the past, I have been with a group who meets with legislators when they are home during a break. Face-to-face meetings have always been cordial and hopefully we put faces to names. I am not naïve in thinking these meetings actually change positions, but such contact is an action step in democracy. I am now not sure of the efficacy of this strategy as our team addresses climate change. Several weeks ago I volunteered to work toward setting up an appointment with either Sen. Jerry Moran or one of his staff members. I called; no return call. I called again. I emailed his national office. I finally got a call back from a local staff member at the Olathe office who asked me what our group wanted to discuss. I said climate change! She said she would be getting back with me. Hmm … after a month, I have heard nothing. Is this the way democracy works?
