Letter to the editor: Alzheimer’s support event

To the editor:

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, including 55,000 right here in Kansas. On Oct. 9 at South Park, we can come together to support all those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementia by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Lawrence. The walk is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

I know from experience how incredibly important the support of the Alzheimer’s Association can be, because my family used its services extensively in 2010 when my mother, Sherry, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 64. Its community education courses, support groups and individualized meetings with trained staff helped me to understand dementia, problem-solve issues and connect with resources. All of these services, along with the 24/7 help line, are free to use. The Alzheimer’s Association helps those living with dementia and their caregivers to prepare for the changes ahead and to live well for as long as possible.

On walk day, participants will honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden Flower ceremony — a mission-focused experience that signifies our solidarity in the fight against this devastating disease. Alzheimer’s is relentless, but so are we! Please register online at alzwalklawrence.org and join us.
