Letter to the editor: War on voting
To the editor:
Is Jim Crow alive and well? Trumplicans realize the only way to regain House and Senate majorities is to disenfranchise Democrats and restrict voting rights, namely Blacks and browns — the greatest roll back since Jim Crow.
Trumplicans want to purge rolls, require voter IDs and citizenship papers, eliminate weekend voting, cut polling places, eliminate early voting and vote by mail, haul off drop boxes, reduce polling hours, make people stand in line for many hours in 90-degree heat and make it a criminal offense to supply them food or water, require notaries to verify advanced ballot signatures and eliminate automatic voter registration. This is a war on voter rights. These bullies want to steal House, Senate and governors’ seats, even the White House. We need integrity in our elections!
Republican legislators in 43 states propose more than 250 bills to suppress voting rights. They fear equal access voting runs the risk of Democrats winning. The For The People Act levels playing fields, protects against government corruption, preserves voting rights, puts checks on voter suppression, keeps elections free and fair, strengthens democratic systems, modernizes voter registration, prevents gerrymandering and makes campaign contributions transparent. It creates political consequences for making it harder to vote.
Voting is a sacred right. Don’t let Trumplicans bully people wanting to exercise their right to vote. Government should work for the people, not the powerful. Democracy depends on it. If we fail, we may never have a free and fair election again!
